The Nantucket Council is a very strong advocate for a Nantucket Cultural Arts Center. The arts complex does not have to be in one building it can be in many buildings and it can be scattered. Remember you have the Historical Association, the Atheneum and you now have the Dreamland Theatre and potentially the Nantucket Community Music Center. You have the Artist Association. These are a part of our cultural complex. So in a sense it already exists, but it's not complete. What is needed are studio spaces, a place for the Theatre Workshop.
That's why the Arts council is very much in support of creating and continuing the concept of an arts center. We already have the beginning of it. Nantucket's industry is the tourist business. It is our job to attract people. So just from a simple commercial standpoint it's something that helps us to promote the Island, to create another great reason for people to come. If you have great theatre, great music, wonderful galleries, exciting museums...that's a draw! And it helps keep all of the arts on Nantucket alive and well.
